MEP Chatzimarkakis no supporter of UFree
On 15 November 2011, the European Network to support the rights of Palestinians Prisoners (UFree), issued a press release ("Plight of Palestinian prisoners continues to be raised across Europe") where Jorgo Chatzimarkakis was being referred to as a supporter:
"Lobbying by UFree led to MEPs such as Ireland's Nessa Childers MEP raising the issue of jailed journalist Samer Allawi with the European Commissioner, Cathy Ashton. Katy Clark MP asked a question on about the hunger strike in the British Parliament, an issue also taken up by other campaigns in Europe and by the German MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis."

Mr Chatzimarkakis, however, is not aware of having publicly supported campaigns of UFree. In fact he did not even know of this organisation.
On 17 of November 2011, his office contacted UFree and kindly asked them to clarify this issue. There was neither a response nor a correction.

The Council can not escape parliamentary scrutiny for the proper management of its budget
Strasbourg, 25th of October 2011. Liberals and Democrats supported the refusal to discharge the Council for the implementation of its budget in 2009 as decided in today's European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg. The Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) recommended by a large majority to vote against the discharge for the Council, arguing that the Treaty and practice confer exclusive jurisdiction for discharges to Parliament, a jurisdiction disputed by the Council which refuses complete transparency in the publication and justification of expenditures.
Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (FDP, Germany), ALDE coordinator for CONT, concluded: "The Council now urgently has to adjust to European law and abandon its absolutist position. As Committee on Budgetary Control, we do not mean to pillory the Council. But to discharge any institution, we need insights into its accounts. We have repeatedly asked the Council to provide us with this necessary information. As long as the Council refuses to answer the questions the Committee, and thus the European Parliament as the only responsible discharge authority according to the Treaty of Lisbon, is asking, we just cannot give discharge. It might be that Parliament and Council find themselves in front of the European Court of Justice."
